Carl Friedrich Gauss

Mathematician

1777-1855

Carl Friedrich Gauss was a German matematician who made significant contributions to many fields, including number theory, geometry, geodesy, astronomy, optics and electromagnetism.

Gauss formulated the well-known Gauss’ law for magnetism, which is one of the four Maxwell’s equations that underlie classical electrodynamics. It states that the magnetic field has divergence equal to zero, or in other words, that magnetic monopoles do not exist.

Gauss contributed to lay the foundations of magnetism and paved the way for future discoveries and inventions. The project ByAxon aims to detect the extremely weak magnetic fields produced by the neural activity of the spinal cord neurons to bypass lessions in spinal cord injuries. This technology could potentially lead to regain motor as well as sensory functions.
