BYAXON IN PINT OF SCIENCE 2018
15th May 2018Lucas Pérez (IMDEA Nanociencia) presented our project to the audience of Pint of Science, in Guadalajara, Spain. The talk, included in the session "We are neurons", introduced the objetives of ByAxon to a broad audience of about 50 people.
Pint of Science was born as an initiative of two researchers of Imperial College (London) in 2012, to introduce Parkinson and Alzheimer patients to the research carried in their group. The event was a success, and in May 2013 the first Pint of Science festival was celebrated in UK. Pint of Science is a festival of brainstorming sessions led by scientists in public places such as cafes, bars and pubs. Nowadays, the festival is taking place in many cities across the world. This year 2018 has been a great success, with more than 272 cities from 21 different countries participating.

8TH EARLY STAGE RESEARCHERS WORKSHOP
14th June 2018Today, our partners Vicente Muñoz and Beatriz Rodilla have been presenting the project ByAxon at the Early Stage Researchers Workshop ESRW. The ESRW is an initiative of IMDEA Nanociencia that began in 2010 with the purpose of bringing together early carreer scientists from different disciplines to present their research work in the field of nanoscience to the public for the first time. Currently, the workshop is organized by and for young researchers, and the objective is to encourage participation in the dissemination of science, create academic links and strengthen collaborations among future research pledges. This year 2018, the 8th edition of the workshop has been celebrated, with the participation of over 80 attendees.
Vicente has contributed with a poster, whilst Beatriz contributed with an oral communication. The full programme of the workshop can be visualized here.
HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS GET TO KNOW BYAXON PROJECT IN CNRS-GREYC LAB
6th June 2018The CNRS-GREYC lab has participated to the French national action “Apprentis chercheurs” in order to present the ByAxon project. From January to June 2018, one Wednesday afternoon per month, 2 young middle and high school students participated to the research activities in the lab. They could learn how to deposit thin films using Pulsed Laser Deposition, what is a sensor, how to produce magnetic field by using electrical current, what are analogic and numerical signals. On Wednesday June 6th 2018, they presented their project in front of all the other young researchers, their teachers and their parents.
Thanks and congratulations to Virgile and Arnaud for their participation to the project.
BYAXON, A SUCCESS STORY OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION FUNDED PROJECTS
24th July 2018
The project ByAxon, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme and coordinated from IMDEA Nanociencia, has been designated a success story.
ByAxon is devoted to the restoration of the signal transmission through the spinal cord by developing an innovative implant to help patients regain control and sense of their limbs. Despite the project is in an early stage and much more research is needed to take, ByAxon is shaping what might, eventually, turn out to be a major breakthrough in the treatment of paralysis. The innovative approach to neural interfacing involves the development of a new generation of sensors and electrodes based on nanostructured materials. While its research focuses on spinal cord injuries, the partners observe that the technology could be harnessed for other types of neural interface. Examples include retinal implants, brain-recording systems for people with epilepsy, and deep-brain stimulation devices for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
ByAxon is an interdisciplinary consortium of 6 partners (5 research institutions IMDEA Nanociencia, CNRS-GREYC; SISSA, SESCAM, ICMM-CSIC; and 1 company mfd-Diagnostics) from 4 EU countries (Spain, France, Italy and Germany), and is funded by a Horizon 2020’s Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme, through a grant scheme designed to support the initial stages of research exploring radically new ideas (FET-Open).

BYAXON PARTICIPATED IN THE EUROPEAN RESEARCHERS' NIGHT 2018
1st October 2018The project ByAxon participated in the European Researchers' Night 2018, held on the 28th September at IMDEA Nanociencia, in Madrid. The partners Concepción Serrano (ICMM-CSIC), Lucas Sanchez and Rubén Guerrero (IMDEA Nanociencia) presented to a group of interested people the fundamentals of ByAxon research in the form of talks and interactive activities for a young and general public. In total, 33 visitors attended the activities.
The workshops were organized jointly with young scientists of IMDEA Nanociencia. During the workshops, the attendees learned what is a magnetic field, what are the magnetic signals generated by the neurons, and made the steps to build up a nanoelectrode.
To finish, the visitors could have a look to the "European Corner", where microscope images of the research carried on at ICMM and IMDEA were displayed.
The European Researchers' Night is is a pan-European scientific event taking place on the last Friday night of September; the event receives funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme- Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions- under Grant Agreement No. 818528. ByAxon is an european research and innovation project funded by the Horizon 2020 program and under Future and Emerging Technologies frame.
